Not a sexy date or a life partner, but the perfect opportunity to give back — by volunteering for a local nonprofit. Queen, 29, mingled with a room full of other young professionals at Find Your Cause, an event hosted by Chicago Cares and designed to pair young professionals with charities.
Attendees sipped wine and munched on crudites as they sized up roughly 50 organizations in a cathedral-like room at the Chicago Cultural Center. Representatives of the nonprofits — ranging from a mentoring program that also teaches kids to play squash to a group that helps homeless people get back on their feet — stood by tables, smiling as they offered candy and flyers.
The annual event, now in its fifth year, is one of the ways nonprofits of all sizes are trying to attract young professionals, grooming them to be long-term donors and volunteers, trying to tap their time, talent and wallets. More than 62 million Americans age 16 and older — about 25 percent of that population — participated in at least one volunteer activity between September and September , according to the most recent data available from a survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The survey said Meanwhile, the rate of participation for the and groups was at least 28 percent. To charities, those lower numbers among young people mean opportunity. Young professionals — typically just out of college up until about age 40 — have the time, social and professional networks and disposable income to dedicate to causes they care about, nonprofit leaders say. That means nonprofits are looking for more people like Emily Hanhart, who have the time and desire to pursue passions beyond their careers.
